Also, tiktok was down but it is back now because 45/47 made a statement about giving it a 90 day reprieve. He also stated that he wants the United States to own 50% of TikTok, in partnership with an American company. Reading between the lines there, it sounds like he thinks the US Government should own 50% of it.
Here's the thing that a LOT of people don't understand about Y2K. The reason the worst case scenarios (or even the medium bad case scenarios) didn't happen is because a lot of deeply tech savvy professionals who understood the underlying risk spent quite literally years (in some cases a decade or more) planning for it, determining the needed updates and changes, planing the execution of those necessary changes, and then implementing them.
We avoided potential disaster by actually doing the due diligence and then taking relevant action before it was too late. Because of that, it felt like nothing happened (because nothing bad happened) and somehow a whole lot of people decided that meant nothing was ever going to happen and it was all hype. Because we were so very prepared, now folks don't listen to professionals when they make dire warnings. It is, in fact, very frustrating. It leads some of us whose job is to try to prevent bad things (in technology) from happening to believe that we will just have to let things break before we will be given the resources we need to fix them. It wastes time, it wastes money, it could even waste lives (in the case of certain technologies and other industries). But that is the world we live in and that is human nature.
If you read nothing else for the next couple of days, Miguel, I hope you’ll read this by Rick Wilson (Lincoln Project). I’ve been following him since Era 45:
Bravo, Compa! I deleted my FB (again) right after the election. The 1st time I deleted it was just before COVID began killing us all. Best move I ever made. After Biden took office, I gingerly stepped back in - always with the intent to make a hasty exit should things go off the rails. Off the rails they went - in a hurry. Not because of Prince Zuck so much as about the collective self-righteousness around not taking democracy seriously. I LOVE Substack - although I don’t write as often as I should these days. BlueSky’s a refreshing change too. Welcome back!
Zuck pissed me off back in the day and everybody thought I was overreacting. I even bought an iPhone because they don’t come with FB preinstalled. The corruption that has been building for years is now going to transform America. Nobody alive in this country has ever seen anything like it. Quite frankly, it behooves all of us to rethink how we engage on line.
Respectfully, my friend, the only person doing any kneecapping is Zuckerberg by spending over 7 million to lobby for the banning of TikTok. Let's not kid ourselves: Zuckerberg does not care about us or any of our communities. He is enriching himself on the backs of creators. And, in doing so, he is cozying up to Trump and making Facebook even more about the oligarchs and right-wing politics. He is not our friend, Linda.
I do think, though, that it’s possible to care enough about ourselves that Zuckerberg doesn’t have to. He’ll have to pry my 20-years of Facebook communities from my cold, dead hands. Always good to learn your perspective, though, Miguel.

Likewise, my friend. Appreciate you! Please continue to share your thoughts. I value and respect your perspective as well.
